As of the Fall 2012 academic semester, the criminal justice honor society at Athens State University is hereby currently known as The Athens State University, Criminal Justice Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society; a local chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, which is part of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society.

The Mission of Alpha Phi Sigma is to promote analytical thinking, rigorous scholarship and life- long learning; to keep abreast of the advances in scientific research; to elevate the ethical standards of the criminal justice professions and to sustain in the public mind the benefit and necessity of education and professional training.

The Goals of Alpha Phi Sigma shall be to honor and promote academic excellence; service; leadership and unity. Students participating in this program will elevate their knowledge, community service, participation, and research within the criminal justice field in order to improve the collaboration between academics and services for an ever changing and adaptive workforce.

The Purpose of The Athens State University’s Criminal Justice Alpha Phi Sigma chapter is to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the study of criminal justice.

The academic requirements are an undergraduate student, maintaining full-time status, enrolled as a declared major or minor in the criminal justice program at Athens State University, represented by a chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma. They must have a declared major, minor or equivalent in criminal justice or a related field, have completed three full time semesters; or completed the equivalent of 9 hours at Athens State University before applying. They must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale in their cumulative and criminal justice classes; and rank in the top 35% of their class. Students must complete at least 4 criminal justice courses in the criminal justice major in order to maintain eligibility in the honor society before graduation.
